How Services Are Determined

Service Selector: grooming tailored to your dog’s needs

At Dat Pooch, we do not approach grooming as fixed service tiers. Different breeds, coat types, and coat conditions require different levels of care. Our goal is to provide the service your dog actually needs—not just the option that sounds smaller on a menu.

Some dogs are ideal for a Bath and Brush, while others require a Full Groom to properly maintain coat health, comfort, and appearance. Heavy shedders may benefit most from our Shed-Free Program. We will always recommend the right service based on your dog’s breed, coat condition, and your goals.

Best For

Bath and Brush

A maintenance service for dogs that do not need haircutting or coat shaping.

Usually a fit for short-coated breeds or dogs that only need routine bathing, drying, brushing, nails, ears, and finishing care.

Each Bath and Brush appointment includes all standard Dat Pooch services listed above, delivered with the same calm one-on-one attention and curbside convenience our clients expect.

  • Complete bath and brush service
  • Ideal for routine upkeep and coat maintenance
  • Designed to refresh your dog without a full body haircut
Bath and Brush is best suited for dogs that do not require haircutting or coat shaping. For breeds that need trimming to maintain coat health and manageability, a Full Groom is typically recommended.
Best For

Full Groom

A complete grooming service for dogs who need trimming, shaping, or full haircutting.

Usually a fit for long-coated breeds, dogs requiring breed-specific shaping, or pets whose coat needs more than a bath and brush to stay healthy and manageable.

The Full Groom includes everything in our Bath and Brush service, plus detailed trimming and haircut work customized to your preferences and your dog’s breed, coat, and personality.

  • Face trimming
  • Feet, skirt, withers, and tail trimmed when applicable
  • Haircut from nose to tail using scissors and clippers as needed
  • Customized finish based on your preferred style, from longer and fuller to shorter and sleeker
  • Individualized groom designed to bring out your fur baby’s best look and personality
For certain breeds and coat types, leaving the body hair longer does not reduce the time required for grooming. In many cases, drying time is significantly increased when the bulk of the coat is not trimmed. Because of this, Dat Pooch does not reduce pricing based solely on whether body hair is clipped. Service time is based on the total work required to properly groom, dry, and finish your dog—not just the haircut itself.
Best For

Shed-Free Program

A coat-maintenance program for dogs with excessive shedding or heavy undercoat.

Usually a fit for double-coated breeds and dogs whose owners want less hair in the home without compromising coat health.

Our Shed-Free Program mechanically removes loose undercoat through the right combination of bathing, high velocity drying, brushing, and combing while preserving the protective function of the coat.

  • Designed to reduce shedding without shaving the coat
  • Supports healthy skin, coat function, and comfort
  • Works best on a 4–6 week maintenance schedule
This is often the best option for clients who ask for a “bath only” on a heavy shedder when what the dog really needs is undercoat removal and coat maintenance.

Our recommendations are based on what is best for your dog—not simply the lowest-cost option.

If you are unsure which service is right for your pet, Dat Pooch will help guide you based on breed, coat condition, shedding level, and the finished look you want to maintain.

Specialty Service

The Shed-Free Program

What is the number one complaint of many pet owners? Shedding. Dat Pooch offers a proven maintenance program designed to dramatically reduce loose hair while improving your pet’s coat health, comfort, and overall grooming results.

How the Shed-Free Program Works

A structured grooming approach designed to control excessive shedding and support a cleaner, more comfortable home.

Dat Pooch’s Shed-Free Program is a maintenance-based system designed to mechanically deshed the coat while preserving the integrity of your dog’s natural protection. Mechanically deshedding means we strip out the loose shedding coat using the proper combination of bathing, drying, brushing, and combing techniques for each dog’s coat type.

  • Hydro-bath with premium shampoo to lubricate the coat and loosen shedding hair
  • High velocity drying to help blow out loose undercoat and shedding hair
  • Thorough brushing with the correct tools for each pet’s individual coat
  • Final comb-through after drying to check and refine the finished work
  • No irritating or invasive skin stripping methods and no cage dryers ever used
  • Finishing touches including nails, ears, berry facial, paw treatment, cologne, and bandana or bows

The least invasive part of the process begins with shampoo and drying, which helps loosen and release coat naturally before brushing and combing are used to finish the deshedding work.

Maintenance Matters

Consistency is the key to better shed control

We generally recommend mechanically deshedding on a 4 to 6 week schedule. The exact amount of shedding and the time it takes for shedding to return is dog dependent, based on coat type, age, diet, and overall care.

Some dogs may shed heavily when they are first placed on a regular grooming routine, but this usually improves after the first couple of grooming appointments as the coat begins to normalize under consistent care.

We are happy to adjust grooming frequency over time to help extend or reduce the time between visits based on your pet’s individual needs and your goals at home.

What helps the program work even better

For best results, the Shed-Free Program works best as part of an ongoing maintenance routine that supports both coat health and healthy regrowth.

Recommended grooming every 4–6 weeks
Good nutrition helps pets hold onto hair longer
Dog food quality can be reviewed independently by pet owners
Theracoat® supplements with amino acids may help support coat condition

We recommend checking the quality of your dog’s food independently at Dog Food Advisor. Some clients also choose to support coat health with Theracoat® supplements that include amino acids.

To learn more about double coats and why proper coat maintenance matters, visit the AKC resource on double-coated breeds.

Give the program up to a few grooming appointments to fully settle in. Once established, most clients notice a major reduction in shedding and a much cleaner home environment.

Important Education

Why Shaving a Double-Coated Dog Is Not the Answer

These images demonstrate exactly why shaving a shedding breed is often the wrong approach. A dog’s coat plays a critical role in protection, temperature regulation, and overall health.

A Better Approach

Shaving does not solve shedding

Shaving removes the protective guard coat, can damage natural regrowth, and often leads to an uneven, unnatural appearance. It may also increase discomfort by disrupting the coat’s ability to regulate temperature.

Instead of shaving, Dat Pooch’s Shed-Free Program is designed to properly remove loose undercoat while preserving the integrity of the coat—resulting in a healthier dog and a cleaner home.
